(3) Maximum running speed

Based on the present conditions in the Northern Line and measures proposed above, possible car performances, strength of the track and maintenance ability were studied refering to the experiences in Japan. Accordingly, the running speed on the curved line can be improved by 15 to 30 km/h. The running speed on the straight line can reach 150 km/h at highest.

(4) Transport time reduction

Based on the running speed mentioned above, the speed restrictions in each section for actual operation are supposed to calculate transport time required, including 9 station stops on the way.

Accordingly, the transport time required between Bangkok and Chiang Mai is expected to take 6 hours 57 minutes, or about 3 hours 50 minutes reduction compared to the present 10 hours 45 minutes.

(5) Reference matters for the implementation

In this preliminary study detailed serveys serving for the judgment for the implementation were not made. Thus, study is conducted as reference to discussing basic concepts and directions.

(a) Increase of passengers

When reduction in transport hours is realized, the transport volume shifted to the new limited express train is estimated to reach about 1,200 passengers/day even based on population increase only.

(b) Operating effects by the implementation

An annual revenues increase corresponding to increased passengers mentioned above is expected to reach some 200 million bahts according to the present transport fares. On the other hand, an annual operating expense increase is expected to reach about 100 million bahts. Thus, operating effects seems
